"The demon behind money is Fear." So writes Richard Foster in his book, Money, Sex and Power. This fear produces worry and insecurity that can corrupt the thinking of even sincere followers of Jesus as in the infamous case found in Acts 5. Money is a huge part of all our lives and we need to be reminded of the subtle way it can pervert our thinking. Some say that the demon behind money is greed, but I think its more likely to be fear. Fear of not having enough. Fear of being unprotected. Fear of poverty. In this episode of Thread we look at the first group of Christians and witness the transforming power of the Holy Spirit that allowed them to live happy, free, joyful and generous lives. They were free from the love and fear of money. This led to liberty in so many other areas as well. Are you ready to deal with it when the global persecution comes against Christians? Believers in many nations have been dealing with deadly persecution for decades. They have seen their freedom of speech outlawed, their children taken from them due to being 'religious fanatics' and have been cast into prison, tortured, maimed and martyred. For them persecution is a way of life. Still they find a way to worship together and share their faith whenever the opportunity presents itself. Jesus prepared us for the realities of the last days by describing a global persecution when people would think they were doing God a favor by persecuting us. In this time of relative calm we can already see the mounting Anti-Christ spirit in media, education and government. We need to use this time to strengthen ourselves for the challenging season ahead. In this week's Thread we tune in to the infant church in Acts 4 to see how they responded to their own growing storm of persecution. You want to make a difference in the lives of others. So you pray for them and love them and hope that one day the door will open for you to share your faith with them. Is it possible that Jesus may be one of the ways to reach God but that if people are sincere enough God will recognize their efforts and that way will lead to Him also? The early church was crystal clear on the doctrine of Christ. They knew who Jesus was and did not waver in their presentation of his unique position as the God/Man. It seems like the church in many places today has gone off message. Or maybe it is better to say that we have lost our core message from God and are scrambling around to find something that will appeal to the world and make them like us. Personal happiness, healthy marriages, success in life--all these are important things but are just an extension of the general "me-focus" that has poisoned the world anyway. What was the core message of the ancient Christian movement? That message cut through all the clutter and caused even emperors to sit back and listen.
